Purpose of the Role

The primary goal of the Cashier is to provide efficient and accurate service at the point of sale. By following strict cash register procedures and ensuring every transaction is handled correctly, you contribute directly to customer satisfaction and the continuous financial growth of the business. You are the face of Brights Hardware’s integrity and service excellence at the frontline.

Key Responsibilities

1. Transactional Accuracy & Payment Processing

  • Accurate Ringing: Ensure all sales are rung up accurately and efficiently on the registers, following established cash register procedures.

  • Payment Handling: Process various payment methods, including cash (with careful verification), EFT payments, and gift cards.

  • Rewards Management: Check customer reward cards and assist with cashing in points to drive loyalty.

  • Packaging: Neatly pack purchased items in shopping bags, ensuring delicate hardware items are handled with care.

2. Financial Security & Compliance

  • Cash-Up Procedures: Follow daily cash-up protocols and perform accurate reconciliations at the end of each shift.

  • Security Measures: Regularly hand over cash drops to superiors as part of the store’s security measures.

  • Vigilance: Maintain high awareness of your surroundings and report any suspicious-looking customers or activities to security.

3. Customer Excellence & Promotion

  • Greeting: Provide a warm welcome to customers as they enter and a professional farewell as they complete their purchase.

  • Promotional Knowledge: Stay informed about all active promotions and products on sale to answer basic customer queries.

  • Housekeeping: Maintain a clean, organized, and clutter-free workspace at the till point.

4. Operational Support

  • Stock Management: Participate in perpetual stocktakes to assist the branch in maintaining inventory accuracy.

  • Versatility: Perform any other work-related tasks as delegated by the Frontline Manager or Supervisor.

Job Requirements

Education & Training

  • Minimum Requirement: Matric or equivalent.

  • Internal Training: Completion of the Brights Induction (Service Excellence) program.

  • Credit Status: A clear credit score is essential due to the financial nature of the role.

Experience & Skills

  • Work Experience: At least 1 year of experience in a similar retail cashier or frontline role.

  • Numerical Skills: Strong mathematical ability for handling cash and performing reconciliations.

  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in using Point of Sale (POS) systems and processing electronic payments.

Core Competencies

  • Attention to Detail: High level of accuracy and the ability to multi-task under pressure.

  • Interpersonal Skills: Good communication skills and a friendly, professional demeanor.

  • Vigilance: Constant awareness of security risks and a high level of integrity.

  • Flexibility: Willingness to work flexible retail hours, including weekends and public holidays, to meet business needs.
