The Melville store in Johannesburg is seeking a qualified and dedicated Pharmacist to join its professional dispensary team.


Position Overview

The Pharmacist will provide comprehensive pharmaceutical care by taking responsibility for patients’ medicine-related needs and ensuring optimal therapeutic outcomes. The role requires compliance with legal and ethical standards set by the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC), as well as adherence to Good Pharmacy Practice (GPP) guidelines.

This position demands strong clinical knowledge, retail pharmacy experience, leadership skills, and a patient-focused approach.


Minimum Requirements

Essential

  • Grade 12 / Matric
  • BPharm or equivalent qualification
  • Registered with the South African Pharmacy Council
  • Minimum 2–3 years pharmaceutical experience
  • 2–3 years retail pharmacy experience (including Student/Intern experience)
  • Computer literate (MS Office)

Advantageous

  • Retail / FMCG experience
  • Third additional language
  • SAP experience
  • E-scripting experience
  • Registered Tutor
  • Unisolv experience

Key Responsibilities

Pharmaceutical Care

  • Evaluate patients’ medicine-related needs (indication, safety, and effectiveness)
  • Dispense scheduled medicines as prescribed by authorised healthcare professionals
  • Check and sign off prescriptions prepared by assistants or interns, accepting accountability in line with GPP requirements
  • Provide pharmacist-initiated therapy when appropriate
  • Offer counselling and professional advice regarding medication usage
  • Monitor therapy compliance and conduct follow-ups
  • Promote public health initiatives and responsible self-medication

Dispensing & Clinical Oversight

  • Interpret prescriptions accurately and within legal parameters
  • Capture and verify patient details on the system
  • Ensure accurate picking, packing, labelling, and checking of medication
  • Monitor dosages and potential drug interactions
  • Provide clear instructions to patients regarding medicine usage
  • Keep updated with medical aid procedures and requirements

Medical Aid & Administration

  • Process claims accurately for submission to medical aids
  • Correct rejected scripts and manage necessary authorisations
  • Secure authorisations for chronic, HIV, AIDS, and oncology medication
  • Maintain and update customer profiles
  • Merge profiles locally and notify relevant departments for central merging
  • Assist the Dispensary Manager with administrative compliance

Stock & Operational Control

  • Report low or out-of-stock levels and stock discrepancies
  • Facilitate bi-annual stock takes
  • Exercise stock, cash, and asset control
  • Ensure all registers are maintained according to legislation
  • Maintain dispensary housekeeping in line with company standards
  • Adhere to Standard Operating Procedures and Health & Safety regulations
