Position Overview

The Reefer Technician will be responsible for the maintenance, servicing, and repair of refrigerated containers (reefers) used for sales and leasing operations.

This role involves both workshop-based repairs and on-site service callouts, ensuring that refrigeration systems remain fully operational and compliant with industry standards.

The successful candidate must have a strong background in refrigeration systems, experience with reefer container technology, and the ability to diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical refrigeration components efficiently.

Key Responsibilities

Refrigerated Container Maintenance

  • Perform routine maintenance and servicing on refrigerated containers
  • Conduct inspections to ensure all refrigeration systems operate efficiently
  • Identify faults and perform necessary repairs to restore operational performance

Repairs and Technical Support

  • Diagnose mechanical and electrical faults in reefer refrigeration systems
  • Carry out repairs on refrigeration components including compressors, coils, and motors
  • Restore non-operational units to full working condition

On-Site Servicing and Callouts

  • Respond to reefer breakdowns and service callouts at customer locations
  • Provide technical support and maintenance services to the reefer lease fleet
  • Commission refrigeration units on-site where required

Customer Liaison and Documentation

  • Communicate professionally with customers during service visits
  • Ensure job cards are completed, documented, and signed
  • Provide feedback regarding maintenance activities and repair requirements

Procurement and Inspection

  • Inspect refrigerated containers at depots before procurement
  • Estimate repair requirements for reefers when procured or off-hired
  • Assist the line manager in evaluating container condition and repair costs

Spare Parts and Inventory Management

  • Manage and monitor reefer spare parts inventory
  • Package spare components for local and international orders
  • Notify management when spare parts require replenishment

Workshop Operations

  • Maintain a clean and organised Reefer Workshop environment
  • Ensure proper care and accountability for all workshop tools and equipment
  • Assist other workshop departments when required

Component Refurbishment

Refurbish refrigeration components including:

  • Semi-hermetic compressors
  • Fan motors
  • Refrigeration coils
  • Additional reefer refrigeration components

Health and Safety Compliance

  • Ensure full compliance with company health and safety standards
  • Maintain safe working practices in both workshop and field environments

Additional Duties

  • Assist the CWD Workshop when required and approved by management
  • Participate in after-hours callouts and overtime service requests
  • Maintain accountability for assigned company vehicle and tools

Minimum Requirements

Candidates applying for this position should meet the following requirements:

Qualifications

  • Trade Tested Refrigeration Technician (Qualified Artisan)
  • Relevant refrigeration or HVAC qualification

Experience

  • Strong background in industrial refrigeration systems
  • Previous experience working with refrigerated containers (reefers) is essential
  • Experience in maintenance, servicing, and repair of refrigeration equipment

License

  • Valid driver’s license is required
