Position Overview
The Vegetable Seed & Sowing Supervisor will oversee all seed and sowing operations at Sunshine Seedling Services, Pietermaritzburg. The role ensures accurate seed intake, germination testing, sowing process supervision, inventory management, and compliance with ISO standards to maintain high-quality vegetable seedling production.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee seed intake and record-keeping, including weight checks for accurate tracking
- Order, receive, and germinate seeds while recording and analysing germination test results
- Supervise and manage the sowing schedule and all sowing processes
- Lead coir expansion, tray placement, blanking, and tray positioning tasks
- Monitor and maintain seed, growing media, and fertilizer inventory levels
- Receive and verify deliveries from suppliers for accuracy
- Conduct monthly stock takes on seeds, growing media, trays, and pallets
- Perform basic maintenance on sowing machines and conduct weekly and monthly checks
- Supervise tray dipping processes, ensuring ISO-compliant procedures
- Train, guide, and mentor team members in seed and sowing operations
Minimum Requirements
- Matric / Grade 12
- Proven experience in seedling production or similar agricultural role
- Administrative experience in record-keeping and reporting
- Familiarity with ISO standards in agricultural processes (advantageous)
- Experience in supervising and training a team
- Strong attention to detail and organisational skills
- Computer literate (Microsoft Office Suite)
