Key Responsibilities of a Shop Assistant
Customer Experience & Sales
- Create a welcoming, inspirational, and personalised experience for customers
- Support achievement of store sales targets and operational standards
- Increase basket size through upselling and link selling
- Promote Loyalty Card membership and explain benefits
- Inform customers about promotions, discounts, and special offers
- Perform makeovers professionally and record product usage
- Handle customer queries, feedback, and complaints effectively
Store Operations & Merchandising
- Maintain visual merchandising standards across all areas
- Ensure shelves are fully stocked, clean, and organised
- Implement promotional displays using approved materials
- Maintain cleanliness and hygiene in-store and stockroom
- Participate in daily floor walks and team discussions
Stock Control & Inventory Management
- Assist with stock takes and cycle counts
- Apply FIFO (First In, First Out) stock rotation principles
- Report stock shortages, damages, and discrepancies
- Ensure proper stock handling and storage
Team Collaboration & Communication
- Attend morning meetings and scheduled training sessions
- Communicate effectively with the Store Supervisor
- Assist with onboarding and training of new staff
- Stay informed on store updates and notices
Compliance & Procedures
- Follow all policies including POS, cash handling, and banking procedures
- Ensure accurate pricing, markdowns, and promotions
- Maintain operational checklist standards
- Report any policy breaches or concerns appropriately
Minimum Requirements – Shop Assistant
Education:
- Matric / Grade 12 or equivalent qualification — essential
Experience:
- Minimum 1 year working experience in retail — essential
- Experience in beauty, skincare, or fragrance products — advantageous
Technical Skills:
- Experience with Point of Sale (POS) systems — advantageous
- Basic Microsoft Office skills (Email and Excel) — advantageous
