About the Role
The purpose of this role is to deliver excellent customer service, support effective stock management, maintain store standards, handle point of sale processes, and contribute to achieving and exceeding sales targets.
As a Shop Assistant, you will play a key role in creating a positive shopping experience while ensuring smooth store operations and strong product availability.
Key Responsibilities of a Shop Assistant
Customer Experience & Sales
- Create a welcoming, inspirational, and personalised experience for customers
- Support achievement of store sales targets and operational standards
- Increase basket size through upselling and link selling
- Promote Loyalty Card membership and explain benefits
- Explain promotions, discounts, and special offers to customers
- Perform makeovers professionally and record product usage
- Respond to customer queries, complaints, and requests
Store Operations & Merchandising
- Maintain visual merchandising standards to ensure an attractive store
- Ensure shelves are fully stocked, clean, and well-organised
- Implement promotional displays using approved materials
- Maintain cleanliness and hygiene across store and stockroom
- Participate in daily floor walks and operational discussions
Stock Control & Inventory Management
- Assist with stock takes and cycle counts
- Apply FIFO (First In, First Out) stock rotation principles
- Report low stock levels, damages, and discrepancies
- Ensure proper stock handling and storage procedures
Team Collaboration & Communication
- Attend morning meetings and scheduled training sessions
- Communicate effectively with the Store Supervisor
- Assist with onboarding and training of new employees
- Stay updated on store notices and operational requirements
Compliance & Procedures
- Follow all policies including POS, cash handling, and banking procedures
- Ensure accurate pricing, markups, markdowns, and promotions
- Maintain operational checklist standards
- Report any breaches or concerns through the correct channels
Minimum Requirements – Shop Assistant
Education:
- Matric / Grade 12 or equivalent qualification — essential
Experience:
- Minimum 1 year retail experience — essential
- Experience in beauty, skincare, or fragrance products — advantageous
Technical Skills:
- Experience with Point of Sale (POS) systems — advantageous
- Basic Microsoft Office (Email and Excel) — advantageous
