Role Overview

As a Frontshop Assistant, your responsibilities will include organizing and restocking merchandise, ensuring accurate labeling and pricing, and addressing customer inquiries. You’ll be key to upholding the standards of stock presentation and availability, supporting overall store functionality. This role requires strong organizational skills, the ability to work well in a fast-paced retail environment, and a customer-centered approach.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Merchandising and Stock Control:
    • Ensure all products are correctly displayed on shelves, fully stocked, and neatly arranged to maximize sales and maintain a positive shopping experience.
    • Monitor stock for sell-by dates, ensuring timely rotation to prevent product expiration.
    • Handle out-of-stock items promptly, following up on customer inquiries and updating management on stock levels.
  2. Stock Receiving and Storage:
    • Assist in receiving deliveries, ensuring items are placed in the correct areas, labeled accurately, and maintained for easy access.
    • Ensure storerooms are organized, neat, and conducive to efficient restocking.
    • Support back shopping processes and help with the organization of storage areas to meet health and safety standards.
  3. Customer Assistance:
    • Develop a professional rapport with customers, providing knowledgeable, friendly service, and assisting with product selections and inquiries.
    • Facilitate the handling of returns and exchanges as authorized by the Frontshop Leader, following company policies.
    • Process loyalty card applications and educate customers on promotional and loyalty offers.
  4. Transaction Handling:
    • Conduct transactions accurately, handling all payment types and ensuring the till balance remains accurate.
    • Process price adjustments and voids with approval, maintaining cash flow integrity in line with SOPs.
    • Secure cash deposits as per company protocols and support loss prevention by ensuring all items are scanned and paid for.
  5. Product Knowledge and Compliance:
    • Stay updated on product details to assist customers effectively and provide recommendations.
    • Report and document stock shortages, damaged or expired stock, and any suspicious activities or incidents.
    • Follow all Dis-Chem standards and procedures, including those related to uniform, hygiene, and health and safety practices.
  6. Administrative Support:
    • Help maintain records of stock movement, including low and out-of-stock items, damaged stock, and product returns.
    • Support stocktaking efforts by assisting with regular counts and inventory checks.
    • Facilitate the orderly processing of documentation for stock control and assist in store record-keeping tasks.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Education:
    • Matric / Grade 12 qualification is required.
  • Experience:
    • 0-6 months of retail experience is essential; a year of experience in a retail environment or a certification in Retail Business Management is advantageous.
  • Skills:
    • Basic knowledge of retail operations, stock rotation, and customer service principles.
    • Proficient in basic math (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).
    • Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills to address customer inquiries effectively.
    • Good physical stamina, as the position may require lifting and organizing stock.

  • Retail Operations Knowledge:
    • An understanding of fundamental retail procedures, including handling stock and identifying issues that need escalation.
  • Time Management and Attention to Detail:
    • Ability to prioritize tasks effectively in a dynamic retail setting while paying close attention to stock and transaction accuracy.
  • Problem Solving and Initiative:
    • Ability to identify and resolve customer concerns independently and escalate issues when necessary.

Special Conditions of Employment

  • Work Hours: Must be willing to work flexible retail hours, including weekends and public holidays.
  • Eligibility: South African citizenship required, along with a clean credit and criminal record.
  • Transportation: Having a driver’s license and reliable transport is beneficial.
