Technical Maintenance Opportunity at Bidvest Facilities Management
Bidvest Facilities Management is seeking a skilled and dependable Handyman (HVAC) to join its Telecommunications division on a permanent basis in Cape Town, Western Cape. This role is suited to a technically competent individual with hands-on experience in electrical and mechanical maintenance, particularly within HVAC systems, who is committed to delivering high-quality maintenance services in line with client and company standards.
The position plays a vital role in supporting business maintenance strategies through planned, preventive, and emergency maintenance, ensuring uninterrupted operations and consistent service delivery across client sites.
About the Role
The Handyman (HVAC) is responsible for executing timeous, compliant, and quality maintenance on specified electrical and mechanical equipment. The role focuses on ensuring that all maintenance activities are completed in accordance with legislation, service level agreements (SLAs), job plans, and safety standards.
This position requires a strong understanding of HVAC systems, the ability to identify and resolve faults efficiently, and the discipline to work within structured maintenance schedules while responding effectively to emergency call-outs. The successful candidate will work closely with artisans, facilities managers, and service managers to ensure operational continuity.
Key Responsibilities
Planned, Preventive, and Emergency Maintenance
The successful candidate will be responsible for completing maintenance tasks as assigned through job cards, ensuring all specified equipment is serviced according to planned schedules. This includes preventive maintenance activities as well as emergency fault rectification in line with legislative requirements, client SLAs, and approved job plans.
All maintenance work must meet required quality standards while supporting the overall maintenance strategy of the business.
Fault Investigation and System Restoration
The role includes conducting investigations, evaluations, and restorations of faults and hazards identified across HVAC systems. This includes working under new SLA phases (Phase 2, 3, and 4) and ensuring that all issues are addressed efficiently and safely.
The Handyman (HVAC) is expected to apply sound fault-finding techniques to diagnose problems related to air conditioners, chillers, freezers, and associated mechanical and electrical systems.
Operational Communication and Reporting
Consistent communication is a critical component of this role. The Handyman will provide regular feedback to the Facilities Manager, Service Manager, Building Manager, or Commercial Coordinator regarding the status of repairs and system restorations.
All irregular occurrences must be reported timeously to the maintenance control centre or relevant management personnel, ensuring transparency and prompt escalation when required.
Artisan Support and General Duties
The position requires assisting artisans with major repairs and servicing tasks, providing technical support where needed. The Handyman will also be expected to undertake additional related duties and assignments as required from time to time, supporting broader maintenance operations.
Minimum Requirements
To be considered for this role, candidates must meet the following requirements:

Matric (Senior Certificate)

N3 Technical Qualification (Electrical or Mechanical)

Valid South African Driver’s License

Minimum 3 years’ relevant experience in an electrical or mechanical maintenance environment

Experience at basic, intermediate, and advanced levels in Electrical or Mechanical HVAC

Ability to work with hand-held devices and time sheets

Computer literacy
Technical Knowledge and Experience
The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience in:

Safe handling of refrigerants

Fault finding on air conditioners, chillers, and freezers

Piping, re-gassing, and maintenance of air conditioning and freezer units

Electrical circuitry of air conditioners (single-phase and three-phase)

Cable dehydration

Product training exposure (Hyross)

Working under the supervision of a competent artisan for more than three years on HVAC systems

Understanding new SLA requirements and maintenance reporting processes

Knowledge of the OHS Act and ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems
