BKB Ltd, through its PaKHouse Brands – Gritco business unit, is seeking a qualified and experienced Sheet Metal Worker to join its operations in Bethlehem, Free State. This is a permanent position suited to a technically skilled professional with strong fabrication, installation, and maintenance expertise within a production-driven FMCG or agricultural processing environment.
The role plays a key part in supporting production efficiency, preventative maintenance, safety compliance, and continuous improvement initiatives across the operation.
About the Role
The Sheet Metal Worker is responsible for the fabrication, installation, maintenance, and repair of sheet metal components and systems, including ducting and production-related metal structures. The role requires precise workmanship, adherence to safety and food industry standards, and the ability to diagnose and resolve mechanical or structural issues efficiently.
In addition to hands-on technical work, the role includes supervisory responsibility over subordinates and external contractors to ensure that maintenance services are delivered effectively, safely, and in line with operational requirements. The incumbent contributes directly to preventative maintenance planning, breakdown response, productivity improvements, and compliance with food safety and health standards.
Key Responsibilities
Sheet Metal Fabrication and Installation
The successful candidate will fabricate components from metal sheets by cutting, shaping, and joining materials to create specific parts and structures required for production. This includes the installation of metal ductwork and related systems, ensuring that all work meets technical specifications, safety standards, and operational requirements.
Accuracy, precision, and attention to detail are critical to ensure long-term durability and compliance within a production environment.
Maintenance, Repairs, and Fault Diagnosis
The role involves diagnosing faults and carrying out repairs on existing sheet metal installations and equipment. This includes responding to breakdowns, conducting root-cause analysis, and implementing corrective actions to minimise downtime and support uninterrupted production.
Preventative maintenance forms a key part of the role, with responsibility for identifying potential issues before failure occurs and implementing proactive solutions to extend equipment lifespan.
Production Support and Preventative Maintenance
The Sheet Metal Worker will manage and support preventative maintenance programmes, ensuring that all services related to sheet metal infrastructure are performed in accordance with planned schedules. This contributes directly to operational efficiency, safety compliance, and productivity savings initiatives.
The role requires close collaboration with production teams to ensure maintenance activities are aligned with operational priorities.
Supervision of Staff and Contractors
The position includes controlling and directing the activities of subordinates and external contractors. This involves allocating work, monitoring performance, ensuring compliance with safety and food industry standards, and maintaining productivity across maintenance operations.
Strong people management and leadership skills are essential to ensure effective teamwork and service delivery.
Health, Safety, and Food Safety Compliance
The Sheet Metal Worker must ensure full compliance with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) requirements, food safety standards, and internal policies. The role includes supporting food safety audits, maintaining hygiene standards, and ensuring that all maintenance activities meet regulatory and industry requirements.
A proactive approach to safety and compliance is essential within the agricultural and FMCG production environment.
Supplier and Contractor Coordination
The role involves working with suppliers and contractors to ensure timely and quality delivery of maintenance services and materials. This includes overseeing contractor work, ensuring compliance with site standards, and supporting cost-effective service delivery.
Minimum Requirements
To be considered for this role, candidates must meet the following requirements:

Grade 12 (Senior Certificate), preferably with Mathematics and Science

Qualified Sheet Metal Worker

Minimum 3 to 5 years’ hands-on experience in an FMCG or production environment

Good understanding of mill and production equipment

Exposure to food safety audits

Fluent in English (read, write, and speak)

Good computer literacy, particularly Microsoft Office
