Position Overview

This Senior Fraud Analyst job in Cape Town is a strategic leadership role responsible for managing the full fraud lifecycle — including fraud prevention, detection, investigation, and recovery.

The successful candidate will oversee fraud strategy, analytics, technology, and governance while ensuring minimal financial loss and seamless customer experience. This is a high-impact opportunity for professionals experienced in fraud risk analytics, data science, and financial crime prevention.


Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

  • Develop and execute a data-driven fraud risk strategy
  • Align fraud initiatives with business goals and regulatory requirements
  • Lead the Fraud Risk Committee and present insights to executive leadership
  • Stay ahead of emerging fraud trends, threats, and attack methods

Fraud Detection & Prevention

  • Design and implement real-time fraud detection systems
  • Use machine learning models, rule-based engines, and behavioral analytics
  • Integrate fraud controls across all customer touchpoints
  • Manage fraud losses, recovery strategies, and chargebacks

Advanced Analytics & AI/ML

  • Collaborate with data science teams to build predictive fraud models
  • Use alternative data sources to improve fraud detection accuracy
  • Ensure model governance, monitoring, and explainability (XAI)
  • Reduce false positives and bias in fraud detection systems

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work with Product, Engineering, Compliance, Legal, and CX teams
  • Embed fraud prevention into system and product design
  • Manage relationships with fraud solution vendors

Team Leadership & Development

  • Lead and mentor fraud analysts, data scientists, and investigators
  • Build a high-performing, innovative fraud strategy team
  • Manage budgets and evaluate ROI on fraud technologies

Minimum Requirements

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Statistics, Mathematics, or a related field
  • Honours Degree (advantageous)

Experience & Skills

  • Minimum 10+ years’ experience in fraud risk analytics
  • Proven success in reducing fraud losses by 30% or more
  • Strong expertise in:
    • SQL
    • SAS
    • Python
    • R
  • Experience with fraud detection platforms and big data tools
  • Strong presentation and stakeholder management skills
  • Knowledge of credit risk controls and early warning indicators
  • Experience in Collections & Recoveries (advantageous)
