Head Miller Job Overview

The Head Miller is accountable for the technical, people, and planning performance of wheat and maize milling operations. This role ensures:

  • Optimal milling efficiency
  • Consistent product quality
  • Reliable market supply
  • Development of a highly skilled milling team

You will report directly to the Mill Manager.

Key Responsibilities

Milling Operations & Process Control

  • Oversee intake, cleaning, conditioning, grinding, sifting, purification, and packing
  • Optimise milling diagrams, roll settings, and degermination parameters
  • Lead root-cause analysis for process losses and bottlenecks

Quality & Product Performance

  • Ensure all products meet legal and customer specifications
  • Reduce downgrades, rework, and customer complaints
  • Support food safety and customer audits

Asset Utilisation & Reliability

  • Drive Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE)
  • Improve preventive maintenance and reliability strategies
  • Lead CAPEX projects and equipment upgrades

Cost & Margin Optimisation

  • Manage extraction losses and by-product recovery
  • Reduce energy, water, and consumable costs
  • Track cost per ton milled

Supply Planning & Production Alignment

  • Translate demand forecasts into milling plans
  • Coordinate with Supply Chain on raw material availability
  • Optimise campaign scheduling and stock levels

Team Development

  • Build skills matrices and succession plans
  • Coach millers and shift leaders
  • Standardise operating practices across shifts

Continuous Improvement

  • Lead Lean, TPM, and Six Sigma initiatives
  • Use SCADA, PLC, and production data for optimisation
  • Benchmark against best-in-class milling operations

Minimum Requirements

Qualifications

  • Diploma or Certificate in Milling Technology (Wheat)
  • Advanced Milling qualification (preferred)

Experience

  • 6+ years’ milling experience
  • Senior leadership experience in high-capacity milling plants
  • Exposure to supply planning and cross-functional operations
