Role Overview

The General Assistant is a front-line representative of the company, responsible for delivering outstanding customer service and ensuring smooth store operations. You’ll be part of a hardworking team dedicated to creating a pleasant shopping experience for every customer.

In this position, you will assist with daily store duties such as product replenishment, customer queries, stock control, and maintaining cleanliness and order throughout the premises. Key Responsibilities

As a General Assistant, your daily duties will include but are not limited to the following:

Customer Service and Sales Support

  • Greet customers warmly and provide assistance in locating products across the store.

  • Offer accurate information about product availability, usage, and benefits to help customers make informed purchasing decisions.

  • Resolve customer queries or complaints efficiently, ensuring satisfaction and maintaining the store’s positive reputation.

  • Promote store promotions, special offers, and new arrivals to encourage sales and enhance the customer experience.

  • Maintain a friendly, professional, and approachable demeanor at all times.

Merchandising and Stock Control

  • Receive, unpack, and verify deliveries to ensure accuracy of goods received.

  • Organize and display products neatly on shelves, maintaining a clean and attractive presentation.

  • Refill shelves and fridges promptly when stock runs low to ensure consistent product availability.

  • Conduct regular stock takes and assist in managing inventory levels to prevent shortages or overstocking.

  • Identify and report discrepancies, damaged goods, or incorrect labeling to management.

Store Maintenance and Cleanliness

  • Ensure that all designated areas such as storerooms, customer areas, and staff kitchens are kept clean, tidy, and hygienic.

  • Dispose of store waste and recyclables properly according to company policy and environmental guidelines.

  • Follow safety, security, and environmental procedures to prevent accidents and maintain a safe workplace for both customers and staff.

  • Participate in daily cleaning routines and assist with general housekeeping tasks as required.

Operational Efficiency

  • Use cash registers or computer-based point-of-sale (POS) systems to process transactions accurately and efficiently.

  • Handle cash, card, and voucher payments responsibly, maintaining accuracy in every transaction.

  • Assist with opening and closing procedures, including preparing the store for trading hours and securing assets at the end of the day.

  • Support management and team members with various tasks to ensure smooth daily operations.


Minimum Requirements

To be considered for this role, candidates should meet the following essential criteria:

  • Education: Matric (Grade 12) or equivalent qualification.

  • Experience: Previous experience as a General Assistant, General Worker, or General Clerk in a retail or service environment.

  • Location: Must live within 25km of Sandton, Gauteng.

  • Criminal Record: Must have a clear criminal record.

  • Availability: Must be willing to work flexible hours, including weekends and public holidays when required.


Preferred Attributes and Skills

While not mandatory, candidates with the following will have an added advantage:

  • Prior experience in customer-facing roles, particularly in retail, supermarkets, or convenience stores.

  • Familiarity with POS (Point of Sale) systems or other computer-based payment systems.
