Role Overview

The Confectioner plays a vital role in ensuring that our bakery consistently delivers high-quality baked products that meet customer expectations. You will be responsible for managing the baking process from start to finish — from measuring ingredients and preparing dough to decorating the final product.

In addition to baking, you’ll be expected to maintain hygiene standards, monitor inventory, and assist with production planning. Your ability to work with precision, creativity, and teamwork will contribute directly to the success and reputation of our bakery.


Key Responsibilities

As a Confectioner, your daily duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. Baking and Production

  • Perform the complete baking process — including mixing, fermenting, baking, cooling, slicing, wrapping, and packaging various baked goods.

  • Prepare and decorate pastries, cakes, muffins, biscuits, and other confectionery items according to recipes and quality standards.

  • Accurately follow and adapt recipes to meet production requirements and ensure consistency in taste and texture.

  • Weigh and measure ingredients precisely for dough preparation and other recipes.

  • Roll, knead, cut, or shape dough into desired forms for baking.

  • Set oven temperatures, monitor baking times, and adjust settings as needed to achieve perfect results.

  • Combine measured ingredients in mixing, blending, or cooking equipment safely and efficiently.

  • Ensure baked products meet the required specifications before packaging and display.

2. Quality Control and Food Safety

  • Maintain high levels of hygiene and cleanliness in the bakery at all times.

  • Regularly inspect ingredients and finished products for freshness, quality, and presentation.

  • Ensure compliance with health, safety, and sanitation regulations, including food storage and handling standards.

  • Identify and report any food quality or equipment issues to management promptly.

  • Use protective gear, tools, and equipment safely in accordance with company policy and occupational health standards.

3. Inventory and Supply Management

  • Monitor ingredient levels and assist in placing supply orders when needed.

  • Store ingredients properly in designated areas to preserve freshness and prevent contamination.

  • Maintain accurate records of ingredients used and products produced.

  • Manage deliveries and ensure timely receipt of raw materials and baking supplies.

  • Assist with organizing and maintaining the storeroom and baking equipment.

4. Collaboration and Team Support

  • Work closely with fellow bakers, confectioners, and kitchen staff to meet daily production goals.

  • Communicate effectively with team members to coordinate tasks, resolve challenges, and ensure smooth bakery operations.

  • Provide support during high-demand periods and assist with additional tasks as required by the Bakery Manager or Head Baker.

  • Contribute creative ideas for new recipes, seasonal treats, and product innovations to enhance the bakery’s offerings.


Minimum Requirements

To qualify for this position, you must meet the following essential criteria:

  • Education: Matric (Grade 12) or equivalent qualification.

  • Experience: Proven experience working as a Baker or Confectioner.

  • Location: Must reside within 25km of Sandton, Gauteng.

  • Criminal Record: Must have a clear criminal record.

  • Availability: Willingness to work flexible shifts, including Sundays and Public Holidays.


Preferred Qualifications and Skills

While not mandatory, the following will be considered advantageous:

  • Experience: 3 to 5 years of experience as a professional Confectioner or Baker in a commercial or retail bakery environment.

  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in using baking equipment such as ovens, mixers, slicers, and wrapping machines.

  • Recipe Management: Ability to follow recipes accurately and adjust ingredient quantities based on production needs.

  • Creativity: Talent for developing and decorating cakes and pastries with precision and artistic flair.

  • Time Management: Ability to manage multiple baking processes simultaneously while maintaining high quality.

  • Attention to Detail: Ensuring every product meets presentation and taste standards before leaving the bakery.
