Key Responsibilities of a Sales Assistant
Customer Service & Sales Generation
- Attend to customers in a professional, helpful, and knowledgeable manner, ensuring that every customer interaction is positive, productive, and reflective of Brights Hardware’s service standards.
- Generate sales actively by engaging with customers, identifying their needs, and recommending the most suitable irrigation products and solutions available in the department.
- Ensure customer satisfaction is achieved in every interaction, creating a service experience that is appreciated by the customer and encourages repeat visits and referrals.
- Demonstrate a natural sales flair — approaching customers proactively, presenting products confidently, and closing sales through genuine product expertise and customer-focused engagement.
Product Advice & Technical Expertise
- Advise customers on irrigation products with confidence and accuracy, recommending the product that will best solve the customer’s specific problem or meet their installation requirements.
- Maintain and continuously develop extensive product knowledge across the Irrigation Department’s full range — including drip systems, sprinkler systems, pumps, fittings, pipes, controllers, and related accessories.
- Ensure that 2 x Department Product Knowledge Certificates are held and current, demonstrating formal recognition of product expertise within the department.
- Support customers through more complex product selection decisions, drawing on technical knowledge and practical experience to guide them to the right solution with confidence.
Stock Management & Ordering
- Control stock levels in the Irrigation Department and conduct regular stock counts to ensure inventory accuracy and minimise discrepancies.
- Place stock orders with buyers when necessary, ensuring the department remains well-stocked and that high-demand products are replenished without delay.
- Participate in perpetual stocktakes as required, contributing to the accuracy and integrity of the store’s ongoing inventory management processes.
Merchandising & Department Presentation
- Ensure that merchandising is done properly throughout the Irrigation Department — products are correctly displayed, logically arranged, and visually appealing to customers browsing the floor.
- Ensure that all products are correctly priced at all times, identifying and rectifying any pricing discrepancies before they affect the customer experience or create transaction errors.

Minimum Requirements – Sales Assistant
Educational Qualifications:
- Matric / National Senior Certificate — or — a minimum of 3 completed Intercept courses totalling at least 120 credits (essential)
Experience:
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in a hardware retail environment (essential)
- Minimum 2 years’ hands-on exposure to irrigation products (essential — non-negotiable)
- Completion of Brights Induction (Service Excellence) — or willingness to complete upon appointment (essential)
Certifications:
- 2 x Department Product Knowledge Certificates — held and current (essential)
