Position Overview
The Head of Fraud Strategy is a senior leadership role responsible for defining, implementing, and managing the organisation’s end-to-end fraud risk strategy.
This role oversees fraud prevention, detection, investigation, and recovery functions, ensuring that advanced analytics, machine learning, and operational controls are effectively used to reduce fraud losses while maintaining a seamless customer experience.
The successful candidate will work closely with executive leadership, data science teams, engineering, compliance, and product teams.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
- Develop and execute a comprehensive fraud risk strategy aligned with business goals
- Act as subject matter expert on fraud trends, threats, and attack patterns
- Present fraud insights and updates to executive leadership and governance committees
Fraud Detection & Prevention
- Design and manage real-time and batch fraud detection systems
- Implement behavioural analytics, rules engines, and machine learning models
- Set fraud loss thresholds and manage chargeback and recovery processes
Advanced Analytics & AI/ML
- Partner with data science teams to build predictive fraud models
- Improve detection accuracy using alternative data sources
- Ensure model governance, explainability (XAI), and bias control
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work with product, engineering, compliance, legal, and customer teams
- Embed fraud prevention into customer journeys and system design
- Manage third-party fraud solution providers
Leadership & Team Development
- Lead and grow a high-performing fraud analytics and investigation team
- Manage budgets, vendors, and ROI of fraud systems
- Build a culture of innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in a numerate field (Statistics, Mathematics, Data Science, or similar)
- Honours degree advantageous
- 10+ years’ experience in fraud risk analytics or fraud strategy
- Proven success in reducing fraud losses by 30% or more
- Strong experience with SQL, SAS, Python, or R
- Experience in fraud detection systems and analytics platforms
- Strong executive-level communication and reporting skills
Advantageous Experience
- Experience in credit risk, collections, or recoveries
- Exposure to retail or e-commerce fraud environments
- Knowledge of machine learning and big data systems
- Experience working with fraud technology vendors
