Position Overview

The Junior Aviation Technician (Mechanical) will form part of the Flight Line team at FlySafair’s Johannesburg base. Reporting directly to the Crew Chief – Flight Line, this role involves performing essential line maintenance tasks and ensuring the mechanical integrity and airworthiness of FlySafair’s aircraft fleet.

Successful candidates will conduct daily inspections, perform fault-finding, complete A-checks, and carry out preventive maintenance to ensure that all aircraft operate safely and efficiently in compliance with South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) regulations and FlySafair standards.


Key Responsibilities

As a Junior Aviation Technician (Mechanical), your daily duties will include:

  • Conducting Line Maintenance Inspections: Perform routine line checks and ensure all aircraft mechanical systems meet operational standards before take-off.

  • Routine Inspections on Avionic Systems: Perform mechanical checks and ensure proper functionality of critical systems.

  • Fault Finding and Troubleshooting: Identify and diagnose mechanical issues promptly, then execute appropriate corrective measures to restore full functionality.

  • Performing A-Checks and Weekly Service Checks: Carry out scheduled maintenance and record all findings in accordance with maintenance procedures.

  • Daily Aircraft Inspections: Perform thorough walk-around checks to identify potential defects or irregularities before flights.

  • Maintenance and Repairs: Execute necessary mechanical maintenance tasks to maintain the airworthiness and operational reliability of the aircraft.

  • Compliance and Documentation: Ensure that all maintenance tasks are recorded, signed off, and comply with FlySafair and SACAA requirements.

  • Health and Safety Compliance: Always adhere to safety standards to prevent incidents, injuries, or damage to equipment.

  • Tool and Work Area Management: Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free workspace to ensure efficient operations.

  • Analytical Problem-Solving: Apply critical thinking to identify root causes of mechanical faults and propose effective technical solutions.

  • Professional Communication: Coordinate effectively with engineers, crew chiefs, and other team members to ensure smooth workflow and timely task completion.

This role requires both technical precision and a strong sense of accountability, as the safety and performance of the aircraft depend heavily on the quality of maintenance performed.


Minimum Job Requirements

To qualify for the Junior Aviation Technician (Mechanical) position, candidates must meet the following essential requirements:

  • Grade 12 or Equivalent Qualification (Essential)

  • Mechanical Trade Test Certificate (Essential)

  • Minimum of 2 Years’ Aviation Maintenance Experience (Essential)

  • Experience with B737/-800 Mechanical Systems (Advantageous)

  • Experience with B737-8 MAX Mechanical Systems (Advantageous)

  • Previous Line Maintenance Experience (Advantageous)

  • Willingness to Work Shifts, Weekends, and Public Holidays

  • Availability for Short-Notice Travel, both locally and internationally

  • Valid South African Passport (Essential)

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Applications – Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint

  • Strong Understanding of Technical Aircraft Documentation and Publications
