ABOUT THIS GOVERNMENT SOCIAL WORKER POSITION
Karl Bremer Hospital is recruiting Social Workers from Grade 1 to Grade 4 to join the Metro Health Services team. This position is ideal for qualified social workers who are passionate about clinical work, community support, interdisciplinary collaboration, and improving the health and wellbeing of patients in both adult and paediatric care. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Educational Qualification
- A relevant qualification that allows registration with the South African Council for Social Service Professions (SACSSP) as a Social Worker
Professional Registration
- Registration with SACSSP as a Social Worker (compulsory)
Experience Required
- Grade 1: No experience required
- Grade 2: Minimum of 10 years’ experience after Social Worker registration
- Grade 3: Minimum of 20 years’ experience after registration
- Grade 4: Minimum of 30 years’ experience after registration
INHERENT REQUIREMENTS
- Valid Code B/EB driver’s license and reliable transport
- Willingness to work after hours when required for emergencies
KEY COMPETENCIES & SKILLS
- Sound understanding of social work theory and practical application
- Client-centred and problem-solving approach
- Knowledge of public health systems, referrals and health policies
- Ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team including Thuthuzela Centre involvement
- Strong administrative, organisational, communication & report-writing skills
- Leadership, conflict resolution and teamwork abilities
- Computer literacy (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Clinical Social Work
- Provide holistic social work services to adult and paediatric patients
- Conduct family meetings, consultations, and participate in MDT ward rounds
- Provide psychosocial support across hospital units including trauma and sexual assault cases
Clinical & Administrative Governance
- Apply evidence-based practice
- Participate in monitoring, evaluation & quality improvement processes
- Ensure responsible use of departmental resources
Teaching, Training & Research
- Train students and junior colleagues
- Participate in academic programmes and research initiatives
- Contribute to knowledge-sharing and professional development
Systems Management & Collaboration
- Work across the Metro East ecosystem
- Build partnerships with NGOs, government departments and referral pathways
- Strengthen community relationships and public health networks
