To strengthen its SunDefender consumer advocacy initiative, Media24 is seeking a Multimedia Journalist: Consumer who will investigate consumer issues, expose scams, and empower readers with information to protect their rights.
Position Overview
The Multimedia Journalist: Consumer (SunDefender) will serve as Daily Sun’s specialist journalist for consumer rights and protection.
The role involves investigating consumer scams, unfair business practices, and corporate misconduct, while producing compelling multimedia content that educates readers and helps them resolve disputes with businesses.
Through investigative journalism and digital storytelling, this role will help position SunDefender as a trusted consumer advocacy platform.
Key Responsibilities
Investigative Journalism
- Conduct in-depth investigations into consumer scams and fraudulent business practices
- Expose deceptive advertising, pricing manipulation, and unethical corporate behaviour
- Investigate reader complaints involving faulty products, poor service delivery, or unresolved disputes
- Work with regulatory bodies and legal experts to verify facts and understand consumer rights
- Build strong networks with consumer advocacy organisations and whistleblowers
Multimedia Content Creation
- Produce articles, video reports, podcasts, and social media content explaining consumer issues
- Create educational content helping readers identify scams and avoid exploitation
- Produce investigative documentary-style video content exposing consumer violations
- Develop step-by-step guides on how consumers can file complaints and seek redress
- Design visual content such as comparison charts, pricing analyses, and consumer alerts
Consumer Advocacy
- Act as a consumer ombudsman, helping readers resolve disputes with businesses
- Organise SunDefender consumer clinics and community outreach events
- Collaborate with legal aid clinics and consumer protection organisations
- Follow up on investigations to ensure companies correct unfair practices
Data & Research Analysis
- Analyse consumer complaint trends and market practices
- Conduct comparative research on product pricing and services
- Use data journalism techniques to identify patterns of consumer exploitation
- Monitor regulatory changes affecting consumer rights in South Africa
Legal & Regulatory Collaboration
- Work closely with Daily Sun’s legal team to ensure investigations meet legal standards
- Collaborate with regulators such as:
- Competition Commission South Africa
- Financial Sector Conduct Authority
- National Consumer Commission South Africa
- Verify legal claims before publication to prevent potential litigation
Required Knowledge & Skills
Successful candidates should demonstrate:
- Strong knowledge of South African consumer protection legislation, including:
- Consumer Protection Act (South Africa)
- Competition Act (South Africa)
- Financial Advisory and Intermediary Services Act
Additional skills include:
- Excellent investigative research and fact-checking abilities
- Strong interviewing skills for engaging both consumers and business representatives
- Knowledge of data analysis tools for investigating market trends
- Ability to interpret financial and corporate information
- Familiarity with digital investigative techniques including online research and document verification
- Strong storytelling skills to explain complex issues clearly
- High ethical standards and commitment to consumer advocacy
Minimum Requirements
Applicants should meet the following criteria:
- Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Law, Economics, or a related field
- Minimum 3–5 years of experience in journalism, particularly investigative reporting or consumer affairs
- Demonstrated success in investigative journalism projects
- Experience producing multimedia content for digital platforms
- Experience working with regulators, legal experts, or consumer advocacy organisations
- Strong knowledge of consumer scams and unethical business practices
Additional Preferred Skills
Candidates with the following experience will have an advantage:
- Training in mediation or conflict resolution
- Knowledge of data analysis software for market investigations
- Familiarity with legal research databases
- Understanding of financial analysis and corporate governance
- Ability to communicate in additional South African languages
- Skills in building trust with vulnerable consumers while maintaining journalistic objectivity
