Position Overview

The Maintenance Manager leads and manages maintenance, reliability, and utility performance at Pedros’ centralised sauce manufacturing plant in Durban. This role ensures safe, compliant, and efficient plant operations, including preventive maintenance, breakdown management, engineering improvements, contractor oversight, and long-term asset care.

The ideal candidate has strong engineering expertise, experience in maintenance leadership in food or beverage manufacturing, and a focus on compliance, reliability, and cost-effective operations.


Key Responsibilities

Maintenance Strategy and Execution

  • Develop and implement maintenance plans for high equipment reliability and plant uptime
  • Oversee preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance across processing equipment, utilities, filling lines, and packaging systems
  • Ensure timely breakdown response and root cause analysis to prevent repeat failures
  • Establish shutdown plans, service schedules, inspection routines, and maintenance standards for critical assets

Utilities and Site Services

  • Manage plant utilities and services, including boilers, softener plants, compressors, chillers, cooling towers, diesel systems, pumps, valves, fillers, and packaging lines
  • Monitor equipment condition, service performance, and energy usage to improve reliability and reduce costs
  • Support plant commissioning, equipment installation, handovers, and start-up activities
  • Manage engineering contractors, service providers, and technical support partners

Compliance and Safety

  • Ensure all maintenance activities comply with OH&S, safe work procedures, permit systems, and lockout requirements
  • Support food safety and quality through hygienic maintenance practices
  • Maintain statutory inspections, calibration, maintenance records, and asset documentation
  • Ensure engineering readiness for audits, inspections, and compliance reviews

Team Leadership

  • Lead, coach, and develop maintenance staff and technical support teams
  • Implement maintenance planning systems, work order control, spare parts management, and engineering reporting
  • Manage maintenance budgets, contractor spend, and asset lifecycle planning

Minimum Requirements

  • BEng, BTech, or National Diploma in Mechanical, Chemical, Industrial, or Process Engineering, or equivalent experience
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in maintenance leadership within food, beverage, or liquid processing manufacturing
  • Practical knowledge of boilers, water treatment, compressors, chillers, cooling towers, pumps, valves, piping, rotary filling machines, packaging equipment, HVAC, and cold storage facilities
  • Experience in preventive maintenance systems, breakdown analysis, and reliability improvement
  • Knowledge of food safety, FSSC22000, GMP, HACCP, and OH&S in a manufacturing environment
