Media24 is now seeking an experienced Deputy Production Editor to join the Daily Sun newsroom in Johannesburg. This leadership role plays a critical part in ensuring that daily editorial content is produced accurately, efficiently, and in line with the publication’s editorial standards.

Position Overview

The Deputy Production Editor serves as a senior editorial production leader within the Daily Sun newsroom. The role supports the Production Editor by managing daily editorial workflows, ensuring that all published content meets the highest standards of accuracy, quality, and visual presentation.

This position also functions as an audio and visual support desk, coordinating between journalists, designers, videographers, and technical teams to produce engaging digital and print content.

The successful candidate will help drive the Daily Sun video content strategy, supervise multimedia teams, and ensure smooth newsroom operations under tight daily deadlines.

This role is ideal for professionals experienced in newsroom production management, digital publishing, content editing, and multimedia journalism.

Key Responsibilities

Editorial Production Management

  • Supervise daily newsroom production workflows from editorial copy through to final publishing.
  • Coordinate with journalists and editors to ensure content deadlines are met.
  • Oversee web layout, page design, and visual content placement in collaboration with design teams.
  • Manage production schedules and adjust workflows when breaking news occurs.
  • Ensure all published content aligns with the Daily Sun editorial guidelines.

Digital Publishing & Multimedia Content

  • Produce and publish digital content in line with Daily Sun’s video and multimedia strategy.
  • Oversee the integration of video content into online news stories.
  • Work closely with videographers and multimedia journalists on storytelling formats.
  • Ensure content is optimized for web, mobile, and social media platforms.

Editorial Quality Control

  • Review and approve stories before publication.
  • Ensure accuracy in headlines, captions, bylines, and article text.
  • Maintain consistency in typography, layout, and visual hierarchy.
  • Ensure compliance with South African media law and press ethics.

Leadership & Team Development

  • Lead and mentor video editors and videographers.
  • Provide coaching and constructive feedback to editorial production staff.
  • Coordinate shift schedules and manage team resources during high-volume production periods.
  • Support training initiatives to improve newsroom technical skills.

Production Systems & Workflow Efficiency

  • Oversee the use of content management systems and newsroom production software.
  • Monitor and improve production processes to increase efficiency.
  • Coordinate with IT teams to resolve technical issues.
  • Maintain backup systems and contingency procedures for critical publishing deadlines.

Knowledge & Skills Required

To succeed in this role, candidates should demonstrate strong editorial leadership, digital publishing expertise, and a deep understanding of multimedia journalism.

Key competencies include:

  • Strong knowledge of South African media law, press ethics, and newsroom regulations
  • Excellent command of the English language
  • Advanced editing, proofreading, and headline-writing skills
  • Knowledge of digital publishing platforms and newsroom CMS systems
  • Understanding of social media integration for digital news distribution
  • Familiarity with videography, photography, and visual storytelling
  • Strong organisational and deadline management skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced newsroom environment

Candidates must also be comfortable collaborating across editorial, design, and multimedia teams.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants should meet the following qualifications and experience criteria:

  • Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism, Media Studies, Communications, or a related field
  • 3–5 years of experience in digital publishing, newspaper production, or magazine production
  • Previous supervisory or leadership experience within a newsroom environment
  • Strong experience managing editorial production workflows
  • Proficiency in industry-standard software such as:
    • Adobe InDesign
    • Adobe Photoshop
    • Content Management Systems (CMS)
  • Experience with page layout, design principles, and typography
  • Ability to meet tight editorial deadlines in a fast-paced newsroom

Additional language skills relevant to Daily Sun’s audience will be considered an advantage.
