The Frontshop Assistant is the face of the Dis-Chem frontshop experience — engaging with customers professionally and helpfully at every touchpoint, resolving out-of-stock queries timeously, and maintaining the high housekeeping and presentation standards that Dis-Chem customers expect.

This is an entry-level permanent role ideally suited to a self-motivated, numerically aware, and customer-centric individual who takes personal responsibility for the quality and timeliness of their work and can perform consistently across all frontshop functions with minimal oversight. Candidates must be available to work retail hours, be South African citizens, hold a valid driver’s licence, and have a clear MIE, criminal, and credit record.

Please note: A valid driver’s licence and own reliable transport are listed as special employment conditions for this post. South African citizenship, a clear criminal record, and a clear credit rating are also essential prerequisites.

Key Responsibilities of a Frontshop Assistant

Merchandising, Shelving & Stock Presentation

  • Ensure that full ranges of products are on the shelves at all times and neatly presented, maintaining the visual merchandising standards expected across all Dis-Chem frontshop categories.
  • Restock merchandise when needed to ensure maximum sales potential and a consistent on-shelf availability for customers throughout the trading day.
  • Ensure all delivered stock and stock pulled from the storeroom is stored and packed in the correct designated shelf space without exception.
  • Ensure that all merchandise displays, labels, and pricing are correct at all times, reporting all price discrepancies to management promptly.
  • Facilitate regular stock rotation, ensuring older stock is moved to the front and that Dis-Chem’s stock control procedures are strictly adhered to at all times.
  • Ensure boxes are flattened after unpacking stock and taken to the designated disposal area in accordance with housekeeping standards.

Stock Control, Expiry & Loss Prevention

  • Maintain the stock on shelves to ensure no product has reached or passed its sell-by date, identifying and reporting expired stock to management immediately.
  • Report low stock levels, out-of-stock items, damaged stock, and expired stock to management in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Follow up on all out-of-stock queries from customers in line with the customer service out-of-stock list, ensuring all queries are addressed timeously and professionally.
  • Identify and report damaged and expired stock immediately to management, handling all merchandise carefully at all times to prevent losses.
  • Assist with the counting of stock files and general stocktaking as required, applying numerical accuracy and attention to detail throughout the process.
  • Ensure that all outgoing stock, items, and scripts are scanned and paid for before leaving the store.

Point of Sale Transactions & Cash Management

  • Transact all customer purchases — receive, verify, and process all payments including cash, cards, vouchers, coupons, and any other acceptable payment methods — accurately and in accordance with Dis-Chem’s SOPs.
  • Exchange merchandise and accept returned goods from customers when authorised to do so by the Frontshop Leader, following the correct returns procedure at all times.
  • Process all loyalty cards, including those of accelerated partners, correctly and at the point of every qualifying transaction.
  • Ensure cash is placed in the drop safe according to standard operating procedures and that daily takings — including cash, cheques, vouchers, card slips, line voids, and incomplete dockets — are kept inside the till drawer until deposited.
  • Ensure that all line voids and price changes are approved and signed off by a Frontshop Leader and/or Retail Store Assistant before processing.
  • Ensure accurate cash flow is maintained at all times, reporting any discrepancies to the Frontshop Leader without delay.
  • Adhere to the customer turnover per hour rate as per the Dis-Chem company benchmark.

Storeroom Operations & Stock Support

  • Ensure the storeroom is organised, neat, and tidy at all times, supporting efficient stock retrieval and a compliant storage environment.
  • Assist with the loading and off-loading of stock when required, handling all items carefully to prevent damage or loss.
  • Assist with back shopping when required, supporting the accurate placement of returned or storeroom stock onto the frontshop floor.

Customer Service, Housekeeping & Compliance

  • Establish and maintain professional relationships with customers, providing friendly, helpful, courteous assistance and advice at all times.
  • Keep up to date with new product knowledge to effectively assist customers with queries across all frontshop categories.
  • Report customer compliments and complaints to management promptly and accurately.
  • Report bad or suspicious behaviour — from both staff and customers — to management without delay.
  • Assist with the training of new and current team members as directed by the Frontshop Leader.
  • Ensure housekeeping is maintained to Dis-Chem’s standards throughout all assigned areas of the store at all times.
  • Adhere to all Dis-Chem policies, Standard Operating Procedures, and Health and Safety rules and regulations.

Core Values We Look For in a Frontshop Assistant

Merchandising Pride & On-Shelf Excellence

In a Dis-Chem store, the frontshop is the product — and the Frontshop Assistant is its custodian. We look for individuals who take genuine pride in a fully stocked, correctly priced, and neatly presented shelf, who notice when a product is out of place or past its sell-by date without being told, who rotate stock as a professional habit, and who understand that on-shelf excellence is the foundation of every customer’s trust in the Dis-Chem brand.

Transaction Accuracy & Cash Integrity

At the point of sale, accuracy is everything. We value Frontshop Assistants who process every transaction — cash, card, voucher, loyalty card, or coupon — with the same meticulous attention to detail, who handle cash responsibly and deposit it correctly, who never process a line void or price change without the required authorisation, and who maintain accurate cash flow because they understand that every rand passing through their till must be accounted for.

Genuine Customer Focus

Dis-Chem’s reputation is built on customer care, and the Frontshop Assistant is on the frontline of that reputation every day. We value individuals who engage with customers with warmth, patience, and genuine product knowledge — who follow up on out-of-stock queries without being reminded, who handle returns and exchanges professionally, and who leave every customer feeling attended to, valued, and more confident in the Dis-Chem store they chose to visit.

Compliance Discipline & SOP Adherence

Dis-Chem operates within a highly regulated retail pharmacy environment where policies and procedures exist to protect customers, staff, and the business. We value Frontshop Assistants who follow SOPs without exception, who adhere to the uniform and personal appearance policy as a professional standard, who comply with health and safety requirements with genuine commitment, and who understand that consistent procedural compliance is not a constraint — it is a mark of professionalism.

Personal Accountability & Self-Motivated Performance

The best Frontshop Assistants do not need to be followed up on — they take ownership of their shelves, their till, and their area, and they hold themselves to the standard without waiting for a supervisor to notice. We value individuals who arrive ready to work, who manage their assigned responsibilities independently, who report concerns immediately rather than hoping someone else will, and who measure their own performance against the benchmarks the store sets.

Career Growth Opportunities in Retail Pharmacy & Frontshop Operations

Joining Dis-Chem as a Frontshop Assistant at the Amberfield store provides a solid foundation for a long-term retail pharmacy career within one of South Africa’s most respected pharmacy groups. For motivated, high-performing individuals, the progression pathway is clear:

  • Frontshop Assistant → Senior Frontshop Assistant / Cashier
  • Senior Frontshop Assistant / Cashier → Frontshop Leader
  • Frontshop Leader → Retail Store Assistant / Assistant Store Manager
  • Retail Store Assistant / Assistant Store Manager → Store Manager

Your career path is in your hands.

Frequently Asked Questions – Frontshop Assistant Jobs

Is retail experience essential or just advantageous? The minimum experience requirement is 0 to 6 months’ retail work experience, making this a genuine entry-level opportunity for candidates with little to no prior retail background. One year of retail experience is listed as advantageous and will strengthen an application, but it is not a barrier to being considered. Dis-Chem invests in training entry-level team members who demonstrate the right attitude, reliability, and aptitude.

Is a driver’s licence truly required for a frontshop role? Yes. A valid driver’s licence and own reliable transport are listed as special conditions of employment for this post. Candidates who do not hold a valid driver’s licence or do not have access to their own reliable transport will not meet the employment conditions for this role and should not apply.

What does the MIE and credit check requirement involve? All appointments are subject to a successful MIE (Management Intelligence Education) background screening, which includes verification of identity, qualifications, and employment history, as well as a criminal record check and a credit rating check. Candidates with a negative credit record or a criminal record will not be eligible for appointment. These checks are standard requirements for all Dis-Chem retail staff.

What are “retail hours” and what should I expect? Retail hours at a pharmacy store like Dis-Chem typically include early morning starts, late evening finishes, weekends, and public holidays depending on the store’s trading schedule. Candidates must be fully available and willing to work across a retail shift schedule as determined by the Amberfield store’s operational requirements.

Will I need to operate a cash register and handle money? Yes. Processing customer transactions — including cash, card, voucher, coupon, and loyalty card payments — is a core responsibility of the Frontshop Assistant role. Candidates must be comfortable with basic arithmetic and cash handling. Training on Dis-Chem’s point-of-sale system and cash management procedures will be provided during onboarding.
