Position Purpose
The Trainee Train Assistant role is an entry-level opportunity for individuals interested in pursuing a long-term career in the railway and logistics industry. The primary objective of this role is to assist the Train Driver in safely operating various types of trains—such as freight, passenger, high-speed, and heavy-haul locomotives.
The successful candidate will learn how to handle locomotives under real-world conditions while ensuring cargo and passengers are transported safely and on time. This hands-on training role combines technical skills, communication, and a deep understanding of safety procedures to contribute to Transnet’s mission of delivering world-class logistics services.
Key Responsibilities
As a Trainee Train Assistant, you will undergo comprehensive theoretical and practical training to master the responsibilities listed below:
1. Duty Preparation and Locomotive Setup

Sign on at the designated depot before every shift.

Receive duty allocation and instructions from the Operations Manager.

Determine which locomotive requires preparation for service.
-
Collect and place necessary equipment onboard the locomotive.
-
Assist with cleaning the work area and starting the locomotive as per standard operating procedures.
2. Brake Testing and Coupling Operations
-
Participate in brake tests to ensure roadworthiness.
-
Help with the coupling and uncoupling of locomotives as required.
-
Mount telemeters and other technical devices when applicable.
-
Complete essential forms, including vehicle lists and vacuum documentation.
3. Communication System Checks
-
Inspect and test communication tools such as walkie-talkies, radios, and telemeters to ensure all equipment is fully functional before departure.
4. Shunting and Yard Duties
-
Execute shunting procedures and place or remove train wagons according to the work order.

Update vehicle lists and ensure the safe placement of loaded or empty trucks in sidings and yards.
5. Train Operations and Route Assistance
-
Monitor and compare signal positions and train display indicators with the Train Driver.

Observe passing trains and monitor safe operations throughout the journey.

Assist in handling emergencies and resetting locomotive trip-outs as necessary.

Ensure the safe handling of trains to prevent damage to cargo, infrastructure, or rolling stock.
6. Customer Service and Safety

Report incidents or route deviations promptly to the Train Driver.

Uphold the highest safety standards in compliance with Transnet’s safety policies.

Provide assistance during emergency circumstances or unexpected disruptions.
7. Administrative and Logbook Duties
-
Maintain a detailed train journal throughout the shift.
-
Submit logs to the Section Manager upon completion of each shift to ensure accurate salary processing and job tracking.
Minimum Requirements
To qualify for the Trainee Train Assistant programme, applicants must meet the following criteria:
Educational Qualifications

Grade 12 (Matric Certificate) with Pure Mathematics and/or Physical Science.
Other Essential Requirements
-
Must be at least 21 years of age (as per SANS 3000 standards).

Must be physically fit, with verified vision, hearing, and mental fitness.

Willing to undergo periodic medical surveillance and safety behavioral risk assessments.

Minimum height requirement of 1.6 meters.

Able to carry heavy objects and work in various weather conditions.

Must pass psychomotor ability assessments (Vienna Testing System standards).
