About the Role

We are looking for a Security Technical Assistant to join our dynamic Protection division under Thorburn Security Solutions. The ideal candidate will assist in supporting our field technicians with technology installations, maintenance tasks, and call-out services in line with safety and operational requirements within the mining and security environment. This role is critical in ensuring the technical integrity and readiness of our security infrastructure at client sites.


Key Responsibilities

As a Security Technical Assistant, your duties will include but are not limited to:

1. Installation and Technical Support

  • Assist in the installation and configuration of security systems and surveillance equipment.

  • Support technicians with the implementation of projects in line with company maintenance and installation process flows.

  • Perform basic fault-finding, troubleshooting, and cleaning tasks for equipment such as CCTV systems, boom gates, and access control systems.

  • Help with ensuring the operational readiness of systems through routine inspections and environmental cleaning.

2. Maintenance and Health & Safety Compliance

  • Provide hands-on assistance in the handling and maintenance of safety tools, cables, and electronic systems.

  • Follow all Health & Safety protocols, including mining safety regulations applicable to both opencast and underground sites.

  • Adhere strictly to internal Technical Operational Policies and Procedures.


Skills and Competencies Required

To succeed in this role, the following skills and knowledge are essential:

  • A valid Driver’s Licence (minimum Code B or C1)

  • 1–2 years’ driving experience in operating a company vehicle

  • Knowledge of technical operational procedures and security installation practices

  • Understanding of mining safety requirements and Health & Safety legislation

  • Basic troubleshooting and repair skills in a security or technical support environment

  • Ability to work at heights and willingness to undergo the necessary medical fitness evaluation (Red Ticket)

  • Physical fitness and ability to work in demanding environments


Qualifications and Certifications

  • Minimum education: Grade 12 (Matric)

  • Driver’s License: Code B or C1 – Essential

  • Security Certification: Valid PSIRA Grade E CertificateNon-negotiable

  • Fitness Certificate: Able to obtain a valid Red Ticket Medical Fitness Certificate

  • Must be capable of obtaining:

    • VTS (Vessel Traffic Services) certification – subject to Dover Test

    • Relevant mine license to operate contractor LDVs in mining zones

  • Advantageous to have experience working in mining or industrial sites
