Position Overview

The Safety Officer will play a critical role in maintaining a safe and compliant work environment within the organisation. The successful candidate will be responsible for implementing safety policies, conducting inspections and audits, providing safety training, and ensuring that all operational activities comply with health and safety regulations and industry standards.

This role is particularly important in environments where operational safety and compliance are essential to maintaining efficient service delivery.


Key Responsibilities

Safety Policy Implementation

  • Develop and implement workplace safety policies and procedures
  • Ensure safety programs comply with legislation and industry standards
  • Promote a strong safety culture throughout the organisation

Workplace Safety Audits and Inspections

  • Conduct regular safety audits and inspections to identify hazards
  • Monitor workplace activities to ensure safe practices are followed
  • Recommend improvements to reduce risks and enhance safety

Incident Investigation

  • Investigate workplace accidents, incidents, and near-misses
  • Identify root causes and implement corrective actions
  • Develop preventative measures to reduce future incidents

Safety Training and Awareness

  • Deliver health and safety training programs to employees
  • Train staff on emergency procedures, equipment usage, and hazard identification
  • Promote safety awareness across operational teams

Compliance Monitoring

  • Ensure compliance with occupational health and safety regulations
  • Monitor adherence to company safety policies and procedures
  • Maintain accurate documentation and safety compliance records

Safety Documentation and Reporting

  • Maintain records including incident reports, training documentation, and inspection reports
  • Prepare safety performance reports for management
  • Track safety metrics and identify trends requiring attention

Cross-Department Collaboration

  • Work closely with management and operational teams to implement safety practices
  • Integrate safety standards into daily operations and project planning
  • Support departments in achieving safety compliance objectives

Minimum Requirements

Qualifications

  • Qualification in Occupational Health and Safety or a related field

Certifications (Advantageous)

  • NEBOSH
  • OSHA
  • Other recognised Health and Safety certifications

Experience

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in a Safety Officer or similar role
  • Experience within the mining or heavy industry environment is advantageous

  • Strong knowledge of health and safety legislation and regulations
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to conduct detailed safety inspections and risk assessments
  • Strong documentation and reporting skills

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Experience maintaining safety records and compliance documentation
  • Understanding of safety audit processes and risk assessment tools
