What Does a Casual Cashier Do?
The Casual Cashier at Dis-Chem Tubatse is responsible for supporting customer service at the point of sale while ensuring a world-class shopping experience for every customer. The core function of the role is to record customer transactions on the Dis-Chem operating system accurately and in accordance with company policies and standard operating procedures — with zero tolerance toward inaccuracies and a firm commitment to the elimination of fraud risk. The Cashier processes all payment types accepted by Dis-Chem, manages cash flow responsibly, processes loyalty programmes for all accelerator partners, ensures drop safe compliance, and handles all cash and daily takings with absolute confidentiality and integrity.
Beyond transactional accuracy, the Casual Cashier establishes professional customer relationships, addresses merchandise queries, reports compliments and complaints to the Frontline Supervisor, adheres to Dis-Chem’s 5-star communication principles, and remains alert to suspicious behaviour that may represent a security or fraud risk. This is a part-time, talent pool position — meaning candidates who are successfully screened and accepted into the pool will be considered and potentially hired when suitable cashier vacancies arise at the Tubatse stores.
Please note: This position forms part of a strategic talent pool for Dis-Chem Tubatse. Not all candidates in the talent pool will be hired, and inclusion in the pool does not guarantee employment. However, it significantly increases the likelihood of being considered when a suitable part-time cashier vacancy aligns with the candidate’s qualifications and the store’s needs.
Candidates must be willing and able to work retail hours, reside in close proximity to the store or have reliable transport, be South African citizens, and have clear criminal and credit records.

Core Values We Look For in a Casual Cashier
Transaction Accuracy & Zero Fraud Tolerance
The Cashier role carries a non-negotiable standard of accuracy — zero tolerance toward processing errors, cash discrepancies, or fraud risk of any kind. We look for individuals who approach every transaction as though it is the most important one of the day, who double-check before confirming, who never process a void or price change without authorisation, and who understand that their accuracy at the till directly protects the customer, the store, and the integrity of Dis-Chem’s retail operation.
Cash Integrity & Confidentiality
Handling cash, managing daily takings, and using a personal till code are responsibilities that require absolute honesty and discretion. We value Cashiers who treat every rand that passes through their till with complete accountability, who never discuss cash flow outside of authorised management conversations, who secure their code and password rigorously, and who understand that their personal trustworthiness is the foundation of every cash management responsibility they hold.
Customer-First Professionalism
In a pharmacy retail environment, the cashier is often the last person a customer interacts with before leaving the store — and the quality of that final interaction shapes the customer’s lasting impression. We value Cashiers who bring warmth, professionalism, and genuine attentiveness to every point-of-sale interaction, who apply Dis-Chem’s 5-star communication principles consistently, and who make every customer feel valued, served, and confident in returning.
Security Awareness & Fraud Vigilance
The Cashier is positioned at one of the store’s highest-risk operational points. We value individuals who maintain active situational awareness throughout their shift — who notice suspicious behaviour, who report it promptly and without hesitation, who protect the integrity of their till and its surroundings, and who understand that their alertness is a direct contribution to the security of the store and the safety of every colleague and customer within it.
Reliability & Retail Commitment
A talent pool is only as strong as the candidates within it — and Dis-Chem draws on that pool when operational cashier needs arise at the Tubatse store. We value candidates who are genuinely reliable, who are available when called upon, who arrive ready to perform, and who demonstrate the kind of consistent, punctual, professional commitment that makes them the obvious first call when a cashier vacancy needs to be filled quickly and confidently.
Career Growth Opportunities in Retail Pharmacy & Cashier Operations
Joining Dis-Chem’s Tubatse talent pool as a Casual Cashier provides a valuable entry point into the retail pharmacy sector and a clear pathway for progression as permanent and extended opportunities arise. For reliable, high-performing individuals, the career progression is achievable:
- Casual Cashier → Permanent Cashier / Frontshop Assistant

Frequently Asked Questions – Casual Cashier Jobs
What is a talent pool and does it guarantee employment? A talent pool is a pre-screened database of qualified candidates who have been assessed as suitable for a specific role — in this case, casual cashier positions at Dis-Chem Tubatse. Being accepted into the talent pool does not guarantee employment. However, it significantly increases the likelihood of being considered and contacted when a suitable part-time cashier vacancy arises at the store. Candidates who are shortlisted and screened will be held in the pool and contacted when a matching opportunity becomes available.
What cashier experience is required? A minimum of 6 months’ cashier or till operations experience is an essential requirement. Candidates should have practical, hands-on experience operating a cash register, processing multiple payment types, managing a cash drawer, and handling returns and refunds. Candidates with till experience from any retail environment — pharmacy, grocery, clothing, or general retail — will be considered provided the experience meets the 6-month minimum.
Which loyalty programmes will I need to process? The Casual Cashier is required to process all Dis-Chem loyalty cards including those of the following accelerator partners: Discovery Health Care, Medihelp Lifestage, Momentum Multiply, Legacy Lifestyle, ABSA Rewards, and eBucks. Is reliable transport required or is proximity to the store sufficient? The special conditions of employment state that candidates must have reliable transport and/or reside in close proximity to the store. Either condition is acceptable — candidates who live within walking or short commuting distance of the Tubatse store may qualify on proximity alone, provided they can consistently report for shifts on time. Candidates who live further away must be able to demonstrate access to reliable, consistent transport.
What does “retail hours” mean for this role? Retail hours at Dis-Chem Tubatse include early starts, late finishes, weekends, and public holidays as determined by the store’s operating schedule. As a casual position, shift availability will fluctuate based on the store’s operational requirements. Candidates must be genuinely flexible and available to work across a variable retail shift schedule at short notice when called upon.
