Position Overview
The IT Technician position is a permanent role within the Information Technology Department, reporting to the Office of the Deputy Vice Chancellor: Research. The successful candidate will provide second-line (Tier 1–2) IT support to staff and students, ensuring reliable, secure, and efficient desktop and end-user computing services across the university.
This role is ideal for an early-career IT professional seeking long-term growth within the higher education and public sector ICT environment.
Key Responsibilities
The IT Technician will be responsible for the following duties:
- Provide Tier 1–2 technical support to staff and students
- Capture, track, and maintain all IT assets in the ICT inventory database
- Dispatch IT equipment to users based on approved requests
- Install, configure, and maintain desktop hardware and software
- Install and maintain computer peripherals and end-user devices
- Liaise with external service providers and hardware vendors
- Identify recurring technical issues and recommend corrective actions
- Decide on escalation or manufacturer repair of faulty equipment
- Maintain parts inventory and report shortages to line management
- Coordinate with vendor support to resolve desktop and software issues
- Ensure seamless integration of desktops with servers, email, and administrative systems
- Provide basic user training on hardware and software
- Assist users with software usage and troubleshooting
- Document all hardware failures, repairs, installations, and removals
- Forward faulty equipment to workshops where necessary
- Communicate project progress to the IT Helpdesk
- Collaborate with the broader ICT team on daily operations
- Assist users with malware scanning and email security concerns
- Ensure endpoint security systems are always up to date
- Develop user guides, how-to documentation, and training videos
- Research emerging technology trends and best practices
- Participate in ICT projects, scoping, and resource planning
- Compile operational and technical reports when required
- Engage with internal stakeholders and provide technical consultation
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- National Diploma in Information Communication Technology (NQF Level 6)
- 2–4 years relevant IT support experience
- Experience with:
- Computer systems and desktop support
- LAN, WAN, and Wi-Fi configuration
- Microsoft and Linux environments
- Active Directory
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
- Experience with major hardware vendors (HP, Dell, etc.) – advantageous
- Industry-related IT certifications – advantageous
- Valid driver’s licence
- Willingness to work outside normal working hours when required
