About the Employer & Role

Bidvest Facilities Management delivers total facilities management, specialized engineering solutions, and structural property maintenance to major corporate, commercial, and industrial clients across South Africa.
As an Artisan Builder based in Middelburg, you will execute high-quality civil maintenance, structural repairs, wall construction, roof maintenance, and timber/metal fixture installations. Your primary objective is to interpret building drawings, perform precise site assessments, maintain structural integrity across client facilities, and strictly comply with occupational safety and South African National Building Regulations.

Key Performance Areas & Primary Responsibilities

1. Structural Construction, Repair & Maintenance
  • Construct, repair, and maintain building structures, including masonry brickwork, drywalls, roofs, ceilings, plasterwork, and cabinetry using wood, metal, concrete, and composite materials.
  • Interpret and execute technical architectural drawings, blueprints, and job specifications to deliver precise, aesthetically appealing, and functional structural works.
  • Conduct detailed site measurements, structural assessments, and material estimation for planned maintenance and repair projects.
2. Tool Management, Mentorship & Documentation
  • Maintain all building hand tools, power equipment, and machinery in safe, optimal working condition following proper operational protocols.
  • Provide technical guidance, skills transfer, and safety oversight to apprentices, assistants, and junior maintenance team members.
  • Maintain complete and accurate records of completed work, hours spent, and materials consumed for project tracking and client invoicing.
3. Safety & Regulatory Compliance
  • Enforce strict compliance with safety guidelines, the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act, and local South African building regulations on all active sites.
  • Work collaboratively with project managers, facility planners, and multi-disciplinary artisans to ensure timeous completion of maintenance requests.

Minimum Requirements – Artisan Builder

Experience & Core Competencies
  • Experience: Minimum of 3 years’ experience as a builder or in a similar artisan role with proven structural craftsmanship (Essential).
  • Technical Skills: Sound knowledge of construction procedures, building materials, structural repair methodologies, and site safety protocols.
  • Blueprint Reading: Demonstrated ability to read, interpret, and work accurately from technical drawings, plans, and layout diagrams.
  • Personal Qualities: Excellent problem-solving skills, high attention to structural detail, strong communication, and collaborative teamwork ability.
Preferred Qualifications & Added Advantages
  • Trade Qualification: N3 Qualification and Trade Test Certification in Building, Carpentry, Bricklaying, or Construction-related fields (Highly Preferred).
