We are currently seeking a Marketer (Grain) to join our dynamic team in KwaZulu-Natal. This role offers an exciting opportunity for a professional with a strong agricultural background and extensive grain marketing experience to play a pivotal role in sourcing grain and oilseeds from producers, managing client relationships, and enhancing AFGRI’s presence in the regional grain market.
Purpose of the Role
The Marketer (Grain) will be responsible for sourcing physical grains and oilseeds from producers through contracting, logistics coordination, and effective market engagement. The position requires a solid understanding of the grain market, hedging principles, risk management, and relationship building. The successful candidate will act as the face of AFGRI within the region, ensuring optimal service delivery and market growth through effective communication, negotiation, and analysis.
Minimum Education and Training Requirements
To be considered for this role, candidates must meet the following minimum educational requirements:

A relevant tertiary qualification, such as a Bachelor of Commerce or equivalent degree in one of the following fields:

Marketing

Economics and Finance
-
International Trade
-
Agriculture
-
A combination of education and experience in the grain or agricultural sector will also be considered advantageous.
Required Work Experience

At least 5 years of experience in the agriculture industry, specifically in:

Sourcing grain and oilseeds directly from producers
-
Grain trading and contracting
-
Building and maintaining strong producer relationships
-
Candidates should possess a proven track record of achieving sales targets and managing procurement processes in a fast-paced, results-driven environment.
Key Performance Areas
As a Marketer (Grain) at AFGRI, your main areas of responsibility will include:
1. Grain Procurement and Market Expansion

Visit and engage with grain producers within your allocated geographical area to identify procurement opportunities.

Negotiate grain and oilseed contracts that align with AFGRI’s pricing strategies and producers’ expectations.

Increase AFGRI’s market share by proactively identifying potential new clients and expanding the procurement network.

Develop long-term relationships with producers to foster loyalty and repeat business.
2. Market Strategy and Pricing

Determine competitive grain prices and manage market positions in line with current SAFEX trends.

Advise producers on the most beneficial market strategies based on economic and industry indicators.

Provide regular updates on market fluctuations and hedging opportunities.
3. Contract Management and Compliance
-
Ensure all standard contracts are properly completed and signed by both parties.

Track contract closing dates and ensure timely fulfillment of all contractual obligations.

Manage grain delivery schedules, ensuring producers deliver as per contractual agreements.

Follow up on outstanding deliveries or non-performance to mitigate business risk.
4. Risk Management and Hedging

Monitor market risks and recommend alternative pricing strategies where necessary.

Communicate hedge positions linked to pre-season and option contracts.

Maintain an accurate hedging book and ensure proper reporting of financial positions.

Evaluate risk profiles of contracting parties to ensure compliance and minimize exposure.
5. Market Intelligence and Reporting

Conduct in-depth market analysis to forecast grain supply and demand trends.

Calculate crop estimations per AFGRI silo to determine total expected and received grain volumes.

Prepare regular performance and market insight reports for management.
6. Relationship Building and Representation

Act as the marketing face of AFGRI within the KwaZulu-Natal region by attending:

Producer forums
-
Agricultural union meetings
-
Industry expos and events
-

Deliver informative sessions to producer and study groups to promote AFGRI’s value proposition.

Build relationships with various stakeholders across the agricultural sector, including non-farming role players and suppliers.

In-depth knowledge of the agricultural value chain and grain marketing dynamics

A thorough understanding of SAFEX operations, pricing mechanisms, and associated risks

Familiarity with the grain supply chain, including storage, logistics, and contracting procedures

Proficiency in Microsoft Office and related business applications
